When to split a PDF

Splitting helps when you only need to share a few pages from a longer document, or when you need to break a large file into smaller ones for an upload limit. Choose exact page ranges, split every N pages, or aim for a target file size per part. Original formatting, images, and text stay untouched — splitting only changes how the pages are grouped into files.

How to use Split PDF

  1. Drop the PDF you want to split. The page count appears once it has been read.
  2. Pick a mode: custom page ranges, split every N pages, or a target size per part.
  3. For custom ranges, set the first and last page of each range (for example 1 to 5) and add more ranges as needed. Each range becomes its own file.
  4. Click Split file. A single output downloads as a PDF; several outputs come back together in one zip file.

Good to know before you start

  • Splitting does not make the total smaller. The parts add up to roughly the original size; compress first if the whole document is too big.
  • Target-size splitting estimates from the average page size and works in whole pages. If a few pages are much heavier than the rest, such as photos in a text report, one part can come out over the limit, so check the sizes before uploading.
  • Password-protected PDFs need their password removed before they can be split.

Split PDF: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Split and Extract Pages?

Split produces several separate files, one per range or chunk. Extract Pages pulls the pages you choose into one new file. Use Split to break a document apart, and Extract to make a short copy of part of it.

How does split by target size work?

You type a size such as 5MB, and the tool works out how many pages fit in that size based on the file's average page size, then splits into equal page groups. It's meant for upload portals and email limits that reject files over a certain size.

Will the split files keep their original page numbers?

The page content is copied unchanged, so any numbers printed on the pages stay as they were. The PDF viewer's own page counter starts at 1 in each new file.

Can I split a scanned PDF?

Yes. Scanned pages are split the same way as text pages, because the tool works on whole pages and doesn't need to read the text.
