This guide walks through the whole process on a phone, including the two parts that trip most people up: getting the PDFs into a place Safari can see, and finding the merged file once it's done.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad with Safari. Other mobile browsers such as Chrome for iOS should work the same way, since they use the same file picker.
- The PDFs you want to combine, saved in the Files app (on your iPhone, in iCloud Drive, or in a connected service such as Google Drive or Dropbox).
- No account, no signup, and no app to install.
NovaPDFTool's merge tool runs inside your browser, so your files are combined on your own device instead of being sent to a server.
Before you start: get your PDFs into the Files app
Safari can only open files that the Files app can see. If your PDFs are sitting inside another app, move them first:
- From Mail: open the email, touch and hold the PDF attachment, then tap Save to Files.
- From Messages or WhatsApp: open the PDF, tap the Share button, then tap Save to Files.
- From a website: open the PDF in Safari, tap Share, then Save to Files.
Save everything to the same folder, such as a new folder called "To merge." It makes the next step much faster, because you can select every file in one place.
How to merge PDFs on an iPhone, step by step
- Open the merge tool. In Safari, go to novapdftool.com/merge. You'll see a box that says "Drop your files here."
- Tap Browse files. If iOS shows a menu, tap Choose Files. This opens the Files browser.
- Select all your PDFs at once. Go to the folder where you saved them, tap Select in the top corner, tap each PDF you want, then tap Open. If your picker only lets you choose one file, add the others one at a time with Browse files.
- Put the pages in order. Your files appear as page thumbnails. Use the up and down arrow buttons under each page to move it earlier or later in the final document.
- Tap Merge files. The tool combines everything into one PDF. Each page keeps its original size and orientation, so a portrait letter and a landscape spreadsheet can sit side by side without being stretched.
- Save the merged PDF. When Safari asks, tap Download. If Safari opens a preview of the PDF instead, tap Share, then Save to Files, and choose a folder.
- Open it and check. Before you send the file, open it in the Files app and scroll through every page. It only takes a moment and catches the most common mistake: one page in the wrong spot.
Getting the page order right on a small screen
On a laptop, you can see every page at once. On a phone, you might only see a few thumbnails at a time, so it's easy to miss a page that ended up in the wrong place. Three habits help:
- Select files in reading order. If you tap them in the order you want them, there's usually less to fix afterward.
- Rename files before you start. Names like "01 Cover," "02 Invoice," and "03 Receipts" make it obvious which file is which in the picker.
- Turn your iPad or iPhone sideways. Landscape mode often shows more thumbnails per row, which makes long documents easier to scan.
If you only need to reorder, rotate, or delete pages in a single PDF rather than combine several, use Organize PDF instead.
Where to find your merged PDF
This is where most people get stuck. Safari saves downloads to a Downloads folder in the Files app. By default that's usually iCloud Drive, then Downloads, though you may have changed it to On My iPhone in Safari's settings.
The quickest way to get to it:
- Tap the downloads icon or the page menu next to Safari's address bar, then tap Downloads, and tap your file.
- Or open the Files app, tap Browse, and open the Downloads folder.
From there, you can share it, attach it to an email, or move it to another folder. Give it a clear name before you send it, so the person receiving it knows what it is.
If the merged PDF is too big to send
Combining several scanned documents can create a surprisingly large file, because each scanned page is really a full-size photo. If an email bounces or an upload form rejects your file, compress it:
- Open novapdftool.com/compress in Safari.
- Tap Browse files and choose your merged PDF.
- Type the size limit you need in the Customised Size box and choose KB or MB, or pick a preset like Recommended.
- Tap Compress file, save the result, and open it to make sure every page is still easy to read.
Keep the uncompressed version too. Compression lowers image quality, and you can't get that detail back from the smaller copy. Our guide on compressing a PDF without losing quality explains how to choose a level.
Merging photos and PDFs together
The merge tool combines PDF files. If some of your pages are photos, like a picture of a signed form or a receipt, turn them into a PDF first:
- Open Images to PDF, add your JPG or PNG photos, and create the PDF.
- Save it to the same folder as your other PDFs.
- Go back to the merge tool and include it with the rest.
Take the photos in good light and hold your phone straight above the page. A clearer photo gives you a clearer PDF page, because the conversion can't add detail that isn't in the image.
Troubleshooting
The picker doesn't show my file. The file is probably still inside another app. Save it to the Files app first, as shown above, then try again.
The merge is taking a long time. Since the work happens on your phone, very large or scan-heavy files can take longer than on a computer. Keep Safari open and on screen until it finishes. Closing the tab or switching apps for a long time can interrupt it.
I can't find the download. Check the Downloads folder in the Files app, under both iCloud Drive and On My iPhone.
A page is upside down or sideways. Open the merged file in Organize PDF and rotate just that page.
